CLUB HISTORY

Zanshin Kai was founded in 1971 by Shihan Jon Alexander. At the time it was called Za Zen - Zen Shin Ryu Association. In the late 1970s the senior instructors of the association started to diversify with several wishing to concentrate on full contact and other forms of Martial Art. This gradually led to there being only a few clubs remaining within the group and the subsequent breakup of the association.

In 1986 the style entered the British Karate Association (BKA) and the instructors Dan grades were confirmed with the BKA and registered with the English Karate Governing Body (EKGB). It was also at this time that the name of the club was changed to Zanshin Kai so as to distinguish it from those clubs that remained outside of the BKA.

There are currently three clubs, one in Surbiton (Surrey), one in Hampton (Middlesex) and another in Orpington (Kent).

WHAT IS ZANSHIN?

The literal translation of the word Zanshin is "remaining mind" - this refers to the mental and spiritual domination shown over opponent(s) after the execution of techniques and at the end of confrontation.

Zanshin can also be briefly described as 'good concentration and awareness at all times'.
